Origin:

Widespread worldwide – There are various species of Ramshorn snails.

Size:

up to 4cm but rarely pass 2.5cm

Aquarium Size:

20 litre/5 gal – but be prepared for them breeding prolifically.

Preferred water conditions:

  • Temp: 20 – 26°C
  • pH: 7 – 8
  • Hardness: Hard – Calcium in the water helps to strengthen their shell.

Diet:

To put it simply, Ramshorn snails will eat just about anything. Un-eaten fish food, algae, plant matter, they make an excellent addition to an aquarium clean up crew.

Behaviour:

Ramshorn snails are extremely peaceful. They will spend most of their day in search of food or breeding. They breed very quickly and a single specimen is capable of self-fertilising its own eggs as they are hermaphroditic. They are often seen as an aquarium pest due to their ability to reproduce so quickly.

Sexing:

Hermaphroditic

Breeding:

Breeding will be constant.

Notes:

Ramshorn snails are great at keeping an aquarium clean of debris and algae. They will breed very quickly, but this does have its uses. Some fish will happily snack on a Ramshorn snail, Puffers in particular. So if you keep a fish that eats snails, then a small colony of Ramshorns may provide ou with a free food source indefinitely.
