three spot gourami

Origin:

The Three spot Gourami originates in the far east in China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia. There are also introduced populations elsewhere.

Size:

Up to 6 inches.

Aquarium Size:

240l/60 US gal.

Preferred water conditions:

  • Temp: 24 – 30°C
  • pH: 6 – 8.5
  • Hardness: Moderately soft – moderately hard.

Diet:

The Three spot Gourami is omnivourous and will consume a range of foods from algae to live insect type foods. Unfussy in the aquarium a varied diet should keep them in optimum condition.

Behaviour:

Three spot Gourami are often recommended as a community fish, but they are not always suited to it. Some individuals can be fairly aggressive and may cause issues in a peaceful aquarium. On the other hand, some make great community fish, so it is down to the individual fish.

Males are likely to harass females, so a ratio of 1 male to 3 females will help to spread the male’s attention.

Sexing:

Females are smaller and tend to be rounder, particularly around the belly. Males grow larger and the dorsal fin becomes pointed as they mature.

Breeding:

The Three spot Gourami is easy to breed and is a bubble nester. Conditioning with live foods is a good idea if you are wishing to breed.

As the female becomes egg bound, the male will construct a bubble nest and begin displaying to the female.

Up to 1200 eggs may be produced and the male will place them into the bubble nest.

Once the female is spent, she will be chased away. It is best at this point to remove the female as the male will see her as a threat as he guards the nest.

Eggs will hatch after between 1 and 2 days and become free-swimming after 4 to 5 days.

Once free-swimming, the male may see them as food, so it is best to remove him at this point.

Notes:

The Three spot Gourami is a popular aquarium fish, but it is important to note that despite being labelled a community fish, not all individuals will be suited to it.

The Three spot Gourami can also be found in a Gold colour morph.
